There was a nice present for Zimmer Biomet, Winterthur over the last christmas days. The ultrasonic cleaning system, a centerpiece of production, underwent a retrofit over the holidays.

Zimmer Biomet focuses its products and processes on the relief and treatment of a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions and have achieved a leading position in the industry.

Zimmer Biomet's high-quality implants are committed to the highest standards of patient safety and quality. These high standards prompted them to retrofit a core part of their production, the ultrasonic cleaning system. The ultrasonic cleaning system is involved in the final cleaning process for approximately 75% of all implants and is the last cleaning step before the implants are transferred to the clean room.

After a total of 10 washing steps, the implants must be rinsed with ultrapure water in the fine cleaning system and dried using clean air. The implants are then transferred directly to the clean room (ISO Class 6) via a roller conveyor, where they are packaged under clean room conditions.

To keep production availability high, it was decided to carry out the retrofit over the Christmas holidays in 2020. The small time window demanded intensive planning and smooth implementation from all involved, and this in compliance with FDA guidelines. Together with Siemens Switzerland, the retrofit was implemented on schedule and to the complete satisfaction of Zimmer Biomet.
